Almost got my Kansas whitetail
I have lots to summarize from the past couple of days. The area that we go to bird hunt doesn't have good (if any) cell service so I was not able to keep you updated of the daily events well. Long story short, lots of bucks. Lots of big bucks. Hunting whitetails from the ground isn't easy, but it sure is fun.
The story behind this picture was that we were leaving the farm to head back to the river bottoms when we spotted this deer bedded with a doe in a wheat field. He jumped up and started carrying the mail. We sped up to make the next turn to cut him off. I pulled out my phone to catch a picture of him when he stopped...the only problem was that he didn't stop. This picture was taken by me while I was driving about 40mph (notice my dash at the bottom and the HTC Incredible 2 is a nice phone). Immediately after the picture, the buck stumbled going into the CRP, cartwheeled over with his antlers in the dirt. He got up and kept on running. It was amazing that he didn't break his neck.

We are back at it today. This morning we hunted in and out of two 20 acre tree pods. We saw 7 different bucks. The biggest was a 180 inch 10 pt. We couldn't get close to him. We tried getting close enough to a 140 inch 8 pt (that is a big deer) and a smaller 10 pt, but they wouldn't come off the does.
We are back in the same spot after a short bird hunt. Slow going with a few does and two bucks that we could not identify.
We will be roaming this spot again in the morning.

AM Hunt (last day before we dedicate ourselves to bird hunting for a couple of days)
The moon was shining on the fields like the sun this morning. I could clearly see deer a few hundred yards away as I made my way toward the stand. After getting situated, three mature does made their way up the edge of the wheat field. In Kansas that is usually a good sign during the rut because most mature does aren't alone. However, just my luck so far this year, they were all alone and made their way down into the creek bottom. After daylight I started rattling. Within seconds an ugly spike made his way under my stand. I then started glassing the distance. Across the pasture and in front of the house I could see a good buck pushing does. Neither he nor she apparently wanted to come my way. They made their way into a tree pod to bed for the day. I started another rattling sequence and again brought in a really small 8 pt within seconds of starting. He was obviously trolling.
That was the end of the morning hunt. I hope we can find a way to seal the deal. Stay tuned.

Good evening to complete a good day
After a later start, I made my way down a 1/2 mile shelter belt toward a stand on the edge of a tree pod. When I got about 150 yards away from the stand, a nice shooter buck (around 140 inches) busted out of the cover and blew across a field. I was somewhat dissapointed when I got to the stand, but I decided to call right away. Ten seconds into my rattling, a 120 class 9 point stormed into me. He stood there looking for the fight for about 5 minutes. He finally walked off so I could start calling again. I only had another small buck make his way across the field to my tree pod.
My host/hunting partner and his wife were down the river about one mile where they encountered a 130 class 8 point who took off when he saw them. However, the 180 class monster with all kinds of points stayed around showing himself at about 5o yards behind some trees. My buddy said he is the nicest buck that he has seen this year both driving and hunting. The good news is he was standing about 3/4 of a mile from where I am currently typing this.
Tomorrow morning is our last hunt for a few days as we have to meet up with his family for a couple days of birds hunting. The birds numbers are supposed to be down 70% due to the drought this summer. Our current plan is to return back to this area to start deer hunting again on Monday.
Stay tuned for more monster Kansas buck action!
